One moonless night sadness stole in, drumming
at my sternum and whacking my shins. Gloom
addled my thinking, made hope run thin.
My life passed before me in disparaged review.
I saw all I treasured become worthless vermin,
saw my own strength fall wasted and grim.
Soul stain strums at my heartstrings
and whittles my resolve; pain warbles
with each breath and rattles in my bowels.
Forgiveness would wash like a shower,
could ease my regrets, erase
a selfish life, cancel many debts.
