Photo of a Refuge Woman

Oh, African woman,

your features reveal

a tender madonna

grave need can't conceal.

Your image of beauty

strikes eyes worlds away,

mine marveling at the gift

for the child you embrace.

Young African woman

with eyes cast low in pain,

will those lips whispering lulllabies

know joy ever again?
